Yulia Mahr, Unbecoming

Curated by Margot Mottaz

Exhibition: April 27 - May 26 2024

Artists: Yulia Mahr

Unbecoming, Yulia Mahr's first solo exhibition, finds its roots in an autobiographical search for meaning in times of personal hardship and extends into universal offerings about the fact of our ecological being with new and existing work alongside site-specific interventions. Scarred bodies, decaying leaves and fruiting mushrooms at varying stages of their life cycles act as counterparts to weathered stones and murky water, all fragments -equal parts fragile and tough-of ecosystems undergoing perpetual yet imperceptible transformation. Carefully manipulated by Mahr with an eye for filmic sequencing, the works suspend time precisely to conjure a sense of journey from life to death, punctuated by fateful moments of loss, hope and beauty. Unbecoming juxtaposes biological and emotional realities to reveal the essence of our human existence: an unwavering resilience to renew ourselves, to become again.
